“The water doesn’t know what age you are when you jump in, so why not?” – Dara Torres
Who Is She
The only swimmer from the United States to compete in five Olympic Games (1984, 1988, 1992, 2000 and 2008) and, at the age of 41, the oldest swimmer to compete on the U.S. Olympic team. Throughout that period she took home twelve medals, at least one in each of the games she was a part of.
Why She Inspires Us
Even for someone of Dara Torres’ stature there were people who were convinced that she could not succeed in 2008. Many people questioned her ability – they cited her having not competed in the previous Olympic Games, her recent childbirth, her being 41 years old… None of that mattered in the end though, as she not only competed but medaled, proving she still had every right to be out there. We’re all confronted with naysayers in our lives, and there are always plenty of logical reasons as to why something shouldn’t be possible. She stands as a testament to being able to drown out those negative voices out and focus – we’re capable of amazing things when we simply believe in our own abilities.
Her thoughts on nutrition
Dara Torres has long been an advocate for superfood based smoothies. To perform at her level for such a sustained period of time takes an incredible commitment not only to training but to nutrition. Supplements and superfoods in her smoothies would cover a broad base, including chia seeds, amino acids, CoQ-10, alpha lipoic acid, quercetin and resveratrol.
