Superfood Staple: Mangosteen

Mangosteen Thai fruit

What is it?

Mangosteen is a fruit native to Southeast Asia and is currently grown in tropical locales around the globe. Enjoyed by Eastern cultures for over a thousand years, mangosteen is coming to prominence in the West as a super-fruit. Mangosteen has a distinctive, yet inedible, purple skin, with juicy white flesh underneath, similar in composition to many citrus fruits. With a sweet yet slightly tart taste, mangosteen is prized as a delicious fruit and can complement a number of different flavors.

Why is it good for you?

In terms of health benefits, mangosteen is primarily known for its high concentration of antioxidants. These antioxidants, including vitamin C and xanthones, can strengthen the immune system and protect against inflammation by neutralizing free radicals in the body.

Mangosteen also has high levels of important minerals like magnesium and manganese. Chock-full of B-complex vitamins and fiber, mangosteen has also been shown to help improve gut heath and energy levels. With a high ratio of nutrients to calories, mangosteen is a great addition to your health routine.
