Although exercising in an air-conditioned building with high-quality gym equipment and fun fitness classes is a dream, it all comes with a hefty price tag. Gym memberships and personal trainers are pricey, and for many of us, a luxury. For all you fitness enthusiasts on a budget, here are five awesome ways to workout without spending a dime.
Take a step outside
Switch out that expensive Soulcycle class for a breezy jog in the park. Replace your overpriced hot yoga sesh for a bike ride in the suburbs. Cancel that $125/month (!!!) crossfit membership that your friend glorifies, and stroll around the city instead. Your daily dose of exercise is a literal footstep away, and the best part is, it doesn’t cost a thing! While some good old-fashioned walking, running, and biking aren’t as “fun” as zumba classes, checking your monthly bank statement definitely will be.
Explore the great outdoors
Fall is the perfect time for recreational activities. From canoeing to rock-climbing, the options are endless. If you’re on a tight budget, opt for a local hike – or even plan a trip to one of our favorite fall hiking destinations. The most important thing is to make sure the trail you pick matches your physical capacities and fitness goals. (we don’t want you stranded between two ledges, people). Choose wisely, grab a friend, and go explore the great outdoors!
Exercise at home
More of a homebody? Get your sweat on with an at-home workout. Youtube offers thousands of great workout videos –– everything from yoga workouts to HIIT –– for beginners and experts alike. Some of our favorite channels include “Yoga Adrienne,” for –– you guessed it –– yoga, and “Fitness Blender,” which is a great Youtube resource for a wide range of workout videos. Find free fitness events
Fitness classes don’t always need to cost you an arm and a leg. If you live in a small town, your Community Recreation Center may offer free gym memberships for local residents. If you live in a bigger city, there’s a good chance that you can find free fitness events every week year round. Not sure where to start looking? Browse Facebook’s event page for group workouts (you can filter results based on your fitness interests) or check out Meetup to connect with like-minded fitness enthusiasts looking to build a community around (free) group workout sessions.
Hit the courts
Watching Lebron James play basketball or Serena Williams play tennis is an inspiration to us all. While you may not be an aspiring NBA player or the next US Open Champion, it doesn’t mean you can’t hit the courts as an amateur in the interest of some fun and a good workout. Find the nearest court around, grab some friends, and get playing! The competition and team spirit will get you fired up for a good time and an intense workout. Courts are also a great place to find new workout buddies, so don’t be shy and take the opportunity to connect with some new people.
