How a Vegan Diet Can Help You Lose Weight

appearance

Going vegan provides not only health benefits, but also a great way to lose weight. Almost every woman has tried some sort of diet in their past, and many even go so far as to starve themselves in order to lose weight, only to realize that they gained all the weight back once they started to eat “normally” again.

I am a big fan of the high-carb vegan lifestyle, because you can eat as much as you care for, lose weight, and most importantly, keep the weight off.

Being a high-carb low-fat vegan means keeping a diet consisting mostly of fresh fruits (bananas, mangos, melons, pineapples, and dates are great choices), vegetables (leafy greens, carrots, potatoes, and sweet potatoes are great), and a small amount of daily calories that come from healthy fats.

The key is to eat very little fats like avocados/ nuts, and not to use any oils or nut butters, as those are 100% isolated fats. The more defined you want to be, the less fat you should eat.

You might be thinking now, “wait, that is way too much sugar for our body, and sugar will make us fat!”

Please do not think the sugar from whole foods like fruit is ever going to make you fat! Every cell in our bodies is running on glucose, which is the sugar mostly found in fresh fruits. Fruits are the easiest foods to digest and a great source of quick energy. The difference between natural sugar found in fruits and processed sugar is the high amount of water, fiber, vitamins and minerals in whole fruits. This means the sugar is entering the blood stream slowly while the food is being digested, resulting in balanced blood sugar levels, which is the key to losing weight.

So here are my best tips for losing weight long-term

Make it a lifestyle and not a diet

Fruits and vegetables are naturally low in calories, have no sodium or cholesterol, and are therefore the cleanest foods you can possibly eat. Plant-based protein sources like sweet potatoes or broccoli are much lower in fat than animal proteins.

A high-carb vegan diet will make you lean, fit, and healthy because your body is getting enough fuel to function properly which means you won’t have bad food cravings and therefore are able to maintain your weight loss long-term.

Just make sure to eat enough to not get hungry and give into cravings.

Focus on getting fit and healthy

Don’t focus entirely on your weight. Instead, concentrate on becoming the fittest and healthiest version of yourself. You will be treating your body so well and nourishing it from the inside out with all this fresh goodness that you don’t need to have any doubt whether you will lose weight or not, as you definitely will.

Focus on adding the good stuff, not cutting out the bad stuff

These days we always hear what is NOT in our food (gluten-free, sugar-free, grain free etc). I think it is so much more positive to focus on what we add to our food, instead of what we cut out. Tell yourself how great you feel because of all the colorful fruits and vegetable you are adding to your diet, which are all so yummy and packed with all the nutrients we need. That way you concentrate your mind on the positive message.

Keep yourself busy

This tip makes a huge difference and quickly brings you to where you want to be. It’s great to focus on your goals but don’t overstress and put your body under too much pressure. My tip is to keep yourself busy with all the other things that have to be done, and to adopt a healthy lifestyle naturally.

Cut out salt

Cutting out salt is a small put powerful change. A high salt intake may cause your body to retain water weight, which is not actual body fat but can make you look bloated and puffy. You will see what a big difference a salt-free diet makes after just a few days of cutting it out.

Cut out processed foods

“Leave out all foods with a label” was the best advice I have ever received. It makes so much sense once you think about it. Processed foods contain an enormous amount of additives, such as preservatives, sugar, salt and other weirdly-named chemicals. Eating only fresh foods will give you the most energy and the fastest weight loss results.

Don’t use any oils

Oils are 100 % isolated fat, which means the fat is going straight to our blood system and can cause cell damage and other inflammatory reactions.

Although I recommend you eat very little fats in order to achieve optimum weight loss, I do suggest you eat whole foods like avocados, in case you are craving healthy fats.

Drink enough water

Water!! Water!! Water!! I can’t stress enough about how important it is to drink a lot of water. Drinking enough water will make it so much easier for you to lose weight. Start your day with 1 liter of water and add the juice of one or two fresh lemons. Your digestive system will get an extra kick and your body will be ready to eliminate toxins.

Workout

Since you will be full of energy due to all the good carbs you’ve hopefully been eating, working out won’t be a problem for you.

Working out will make you healthy, strong and lean. It is so much healthier for our mind to focus on getting our heart pumping because we want to stay fit, and not because we want to lose weight. The weight loss comes naturally and is a positive side effect.

I suggest you work out whenever you feel like it. Some people prefer to start the day with a run and others prefer to end the day with a yoga session. Find something that you enjoy and have fun with. Don’t beat yourself up for taking a day off. Eating a high-carb vegan lifestyle will already do 80% of the job, so there is no need to stress about going to the gym every day.

Get enough sleep

Sleep is the best anti-aging treatment around and also helps your body burn fat! Our body repairs itself while we sleep, and gets rid of all kind of toxins that we inhale during the day. Give your body enough time to rest so it can function properly. Try to have a 2-3 hour time gap between dinner and bedtime, as you don’t want your body to be busy digesting food at night.

I hope you find these tips helpful and suggest you try it for at least one month to start seeing results. Give your body time to trust you on this lifestyle. Of course, we all have different body types, and what works for one person might not be the solution for another. Nevertheless, I think that fruits and vegetables are the healthiest foods we can find, and that they provide us with all the vitamins, minerals, proteins and fats we could ever need.
