A DIY Salt or Sugar Scrub at Could Seriously Get Your Skin Glowing This Summer

It only takes a few minutes and even fewer ingredients to get the glowing, baby fresh skin of your dreams –– plus, you can go all-natural with pantry items that might already be sitting pretty in your kitchen!

Salt scrubs are great for exfoliating and scrubbing away dirt and dead skin, moisturizing and rejuvenating dry skin, and even acting as impressive aromatherapy agents. Slough off the sand, sun, and sky (pollution is in the air, you know) with this quick and easy solution to your summer skin worries.

Pick your poison

You’ll need three main ingredients, so think it through and choose wisely –– or grab whatever happens to be immediately on hand. Fine sea salt is less harsh than chunky kosher salt, while brown sugar is even gentler for the more delicate skin like face and lips.

After you’ve selected your salt of choice, pick out a hydrating oil to immediately soothe and hydrate the skin once it’s been scraped clean. Some people swear by coconut oil and use it religiously; just be sure to get fractionated coconut oil so it’ll be liquid instead of solid at room temperature. Olive oil is another popular choice, as well as the lesser-known option of grapeseed oil that is used in many clean skincare products.

Finally, set the mood and aromatic intent of your scrub by choosing a corresponding essential oil. Picks like grapefruit, lemon, and orange have a fresh, citrusy scent along with some antiseptic properties that can come in handy. For a super relaxing scent, opt for lavender, chamomile, or bergamot. Peppermint, lemongrass, and rosemary are other popular, invigorating choices.

Mix it up

Using 1 cup of salt, 1/2 cup of oil, and 5-7 drops of essential oil is enough to fill a 12 oz. jar or glass. Once you’ve made your choices and are ready to live with them, combine the ingredients in a mixing bowl and stir until they are well-integrated. Congratulations, you did it! World’s best cup of salt scrub!

Make an unbreakable vow (seal)

Okay, you just made what we’ve dubbed the “world’s best cup of salt scrub,” so the last thing you want to do is let it go to waste. Find an airtight jar or other container in which to keep your scrub for future rainy days. If it’s not sealed against the elements, the liquids will evaporate and your scrub will become more of a crunch.

Scrub a dub dub

Now that you’ve built your best summer buddy from scratch, you can whip up a batch of glowing, sun-ready skin whenever you desire. In the shower or bath, get a small handful of scrub and rub it over the desired area, being careful not to scrub so vigorously that you manage to scrape up your skin. Post-bathing, be sure to layer on the lotion (or oil, or other hydrating product) to help your fresh new skin be at its baby best!
