4 Winter Escapes for Fitness Enthusiasts

It’s the dead of winter and it’s cold over much of the United States. And while shoveling snow certainly provides some exercise, it is a far cry from snow sports! So what are the best winter escapes for the fitness-minded? Here are our top four destinations – at all price points.

Location: Avon, Colorado

Why: To scratch that skiing and snowboarding itch. More exclusive and less crowded than nearby Vail, Beaver Creek combines some of the best powdery snow in the United States with some of the best amenities.

Amenities: Tons. With a Ritz Carlton in nearby Bachelor Gulch and a Four Seasons in Vail (a scenic fifteen minute drive), there is no shortage of well-established large hotels. But Beaver Creek arguably has both beat with the Chateau and the Pines, decidedly more rustic but right on the mountain, and a short walk from the heart of a town with great food and shopping.

3. maya tulum retreat

Location: Tulum, Mexico
Why: Despite being only an hour and half away from the much-reviled spring break destination that is Cancun, Tulum has swiftly become one of the go-to vacation destinations for those in-the-know in North America. Tulum has a thriving yoga community that is consistent with the focus on ecological sustainability and environmental awareness for which the region is known. The Maya Tulum provides world-class yoga instruction in an idyllic oceanfront setting alongside four-star accommodations. When you’re not partaking in yoga classes or relaxing on the beach there are Mayan ruins nearby as well as the famed cenote’s – large, open water pools – to explore.
Amenities: There is an excellent full-service spa at the Maya Tulum. Similarly, given that the main strip of Tulum is a little over a mile long, there are ample options for great, seasonal meals. There are plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, and in general, all the food is fresh and locally produced.

2. Pure kauai

Location: Kauai, Hawaii
Why: If you’re looking for something that will offer you a wider variety of activities, then a trip to Kauai may be just the ticket. It’s an incredibly bespoke experience, in which you’re in the driver’s seat. The sky is, literally, the limit. Feel like taking a trek through the rainforest? No problem. Want to brush up on your kitesurfing skills (or developing any such skills to begin with)? Got that too. And all of this is done with the best private instructors, hand-picked by Pure Kauai to ensure you get the most out of your time. Regardless of what physical activities you end up choosing, you can end the day with a healthy meal cooked by a private chef who uses the freshest ingredients.
Amenities: At Pure Kauai they really excel at serving your every whim. Whether that means having a masseuse waiting for you at a private villa after a day on the water, or attending a local luau, it’s all at your fingertips.

1. chiva-som

Location: Hua Hin, Thailand
Why: For those looking for an even more exotic locale, Chiva-Som is the place. It is among the most comprehensive fitness resorts in the world, offering a bevy of classes. This can make it especially great for couples or groups where you may have some who are interested in practicing their golf game, while others want to hone their yoga practice, and still others want to release stress with high-intensity Muay Thai training. The local garden supplies much of the food for the resort, resulting in nutritious and delicious meals that are the perfect accompaniment to the activity-filled days.
Amenities: Everything. The resort took the term all-inclusive to heart. There is a spa, holistic health practice, physiotherapy practice, and more fitness classes than you could possibly try in a single stay.
